Great Summer at The Hawk - by Robin Gill on 25/10/2009

As winter closes in and the days become shorter, the Hawk Creative Business Park is reflecting on a successful summer in what has continued to be for most businesses a tough economic climate.

On the warmest evening of the summer, the Park hosted a barbeque and croquet evening for tenants and their families and friends on the 2nd July. Park owner Sir Ben Gill played chef, showing off his barbequing skills. The event was well attended with a full turnout from the office occupants and guests.

The Park, officially opened by HRH Princess Anne in October last year, has successfully weathered the current downturn, continuing to attract new tenants as the year has progressed. In August, we welcomed a software company onsite and in October a strategic research and analysis firm.

Easingwold Brownies - visit The Hawk - by Keren Redshaw on 24/02/2009

THINKING DAY ON AIR AT THE HAWK

From North Yorkshire to Newfoundland Easingwold Brownies talked to other Guiders across the world on Saturday thanks to the help of the Ripon Amateur Radio Society and The Hawk Creative Business Park.

As a special event to mark Thinking Day the town’s three Brownie packs and Guides learnt all about radio communication, from morse code to high speed internet chat. Various antennae were erected at The Hawk and experts were on hand to help the girls.

To their delight new contacts were made in Lebanon, Malaysia, Diago Garcia, and Australia. Conversations were held about dog sledging and different guide camp experiences. “I’ve enjoyed being able to talk to people around the world and finding out about the equipment,” said Girl Guide, Fennella Hayes, 12,” I’ve used computers but nothing like this, I’d like to do it again. I spoke to a guide in Canada who is fundraising to go on camp to Switzerland.”

The girls learnt about the origins of radio and were given a demonstration of the way the first crystal radio sets worked by Ripon Amateur Radio Society member Wally Grout. They then progressed to use a wire antennae which uses just the power of a light bulb to talk around the world. The girls eagerly mapped out the locations of those they talked to. VHF and UHF antennae were also erected for the day including an HF one homemade by Society members. The high speed internet facilities of the Hawk Creative Business Park were taken advantage off and messages were whizzing across the Atlantic and back at an incredible rate.

Another new skill the girls learnt was Morse Code. Easingwold Brownie, Jody Salton, 8, especially liked, “ putting out signals with Morse Code, beebing the letters. I even managed to send a message, ‘what time do you go to bed?’”

Nigel Knapton from the Ripon Amateur Radio Society, call sign G1JKE, explained that they approached the Brownies to offer their help because one of the drives of the Society was to introduce more children to amateur radio. Nigel works for IT company Tokoda Ltd which is based at the Hawk and set up the high speed internet link for the day. He knew it would be ideal location for the event because of its impressive internet capabilities.

The Hawk was delighted to welcome the local Brownies and Guides and the Radio Society can no doubt look forward to future members after such a successful day. Pru Johnson, Girlguiding Easingwold District Commissioner, helped organise the event.

“Thanks to generosity and expertise of the Ripon Amateur Radio
Society and The Hawk Creative Business Park, over 40 girls were able to celebrate their World Thinking Day 2009 "on the air and on the internet". The event was clearly a success because when asked if they would come back next year and do it again, the response was a resounding "definitely". What a pleasure it was to
see so many young people absorbed in a completely new experience and
gain their Thinking Day on the Air and Communicator Badges too.”

The Hawk Flies in the Face of Depression - by Amanda May on 28/01/2009

The Hawk Creative Business Park has had an amazing start to 2009. The green credentials and IT capabilities have inspired new tenants to move to the The Hawk. Where many properties are feeling the effects of current hard times the forward thinking of Sir Ben Gill has paid off. By investing in the latest technologies he has future proofed his development near Easingwold. The new clients renting offices are delighted with their new location and more inquiries are flooding in despite the national wave of economic depression. Sir Ben is confident of success:

“The Hawk was conceived with future needs in mind and the current economic downturn has amplified this point. Businesses today need to be as efficient as possible and the Hawk’s unique mix of high environmental standards, relaxed working conditions and state of the art communications offered in a variety of formats from full lease to serviced office or even an ‘e’ office format fits today’s bill for more and more businesses.”

The technology on offer at The Hawk is attracting a wide range of companies both national and international. ForgetMeNot AFRICA (BVI) Ltd provides simple 2-way communication between email and Instant Messaging and SMS on simple mobile phones in Africa. Jeremy George is the Chief Operating Officer, he explains why the moved to The Hawk:

“I moved to the Hawk because I wanted an office space that projected the right image for an international company in the telecommunications industry which had excellent communications with our offices in London and Africa and was close to my home.”

However it is not just the high spec IT but also the beautiful location, the thoughtful ecological practices and the commitment to a sense of community both on site and with the surrounding villages that is appealing to companies.

Ignition Publications is a full-service contract publishing company specialising in sports titles and particularly matchday publications. Ignition supplies matchday programmes to some of the biggest clubs in football, rugby union and rugby league, including Leeds United, Sunderland and Leeds Rhinos.

The company recently decided to relocate from the Midlands to North Yorkshire and is now based at The Hawk Creative Business Park in Easingwold.

"We chose North Yorkshire for our new location because of the lifestyle opportunities the area offers, and the friendly people," explained Ignition's founding director Ian Guildford. "And having the Hawk on our door step is fantastic; it is the perfect place for Ignition. The working conditions are excellent, the technology on tap syncs with our business and we now have a great location from which to develop and grow."

Another new occupier welcomed to The Hawk is IPheions Intellectual Property. They specialise in filing and prosecuting patents and trade marks throughout the world. Steve Gilholm sums up why they chose The Hawk;

“As a new business, IT and environment were at the top of our requirements and The Hawk Creative Business Park provides exactly what we needed. It’s perfect, being here is like a breath of fresh air in every sense.”

ROYAL VISIT TO YORKSHIRE'S OFFCIES OF TOMMORROW - by Robin Gill on 27/10/2008

HRH The Princess Royal officially opened The Hawk Creative Business Centre today. After flying in by helicopter HRH was given a guided tour of the sustainable offices by Sir Ben Gill. The Hawk has been built on the site of Sir Ben’s family farm in Easingwold. Local dignitaries and guests from the surrounding area were also invited to see the new offices. On hand were experts to demonstrate the biomass boiler which heats the buildings by burning wood chip from coppice grown on site. IT company Tokoda showed visitors the impressive voice and data networks that give clients access to the latest connectivity and communications technologies. Chris Gill from Tokoda spoke to HRH.

“The Hawk is truly a wonderful place to come to work, and having The Princess Royal join us for the Grand Opening is such an honour. It is obvious to anyone who comes to the Hawk that what’s on offer is a unique experience.”

HRH also met local businesses who offer their services to clients at The Hawk. It is hoped that this will build a strong relationship between the business park and the local rural community. Lucy Jackson who runs Home Farm shop at Beningborough was at today’s opening and spoke to HRH.

"We feel privileged to be asked by Sir Ben, to offer a fresh food delivery service to The Hawk. Offering our fine, seasonal, local produce will undoubtedly compliment the great effort, thought and precision in creating this exciting new sustainable business park. It is wonderful that the Princess has shown her support. It is an honour to meet her today. This venture is bringing our local community together and it’s great for us to have the chance to build upon our new Farm shop.”

HRH showed a keen interest in both the green ecological benefits of The Hawk and the involvement of the rural community. She expressed a hope that these two important factors at The Hawk would encourage similar developments.

Sir Ben Gill was honoured to show HRH The Hawk Creative Business Park and all that it can offer.

“The potential for the Hawk to integrate an environmentally sustainable complex of business offices into the local community of clients on site and the surrounding community of Easingwold for the benefit of all, was underlined by HRH The Princess Royal when she opened the Hawk Creative Business Park today. Her interest in rural communities and the Environment was demonstrated by the level of questioning and the dialogue she had with those attending the event.”

Practical Completion of Phase 1 - by Adam Gill on 09/04/2008

April 3rd marked the practical completion of Phase 1 of The Hawk Creative Business Park at Hawkhills 2 miles outside Easingwold, North Yorkshire.

The business park, developed by Sir Ben Gill, demonstrates the latest thinking in how the working environment can successfully marry together the needs of the modern business with the latest options on environmental sustainability and IT connectivity. It also has direct links with the adjoining Hotel and Conference Centre at “The Hawkhills” whose facilities including catering and accommodation will be available to clients.

“During my working life I have been acutely aware that the success of any business can be substantially improved by having the correct working environment. The “Hawk”, set in 25 acres of its own grounds with lakes and water features, parkland and woodland will provide an oasis of peace for the business mind to be the most creative. And yet it is situated only 20 minutes from the main line rail station at York which affords rapid connections to London and Edinburgh; and only 40 minutes from Leeds International Airport” said Sir Ben

“And in addition the Hawk will have much more. The buildings have been converted to use the latest technology. The lighting is based on dimmable low energy strip lighting controlled by an intelligent building system that removes the need for normal light switches and automatically varies the internal light to meet the changing external light and give a constant working environment.

“The heating comes from locally sourced wood chip, some grown on site, via an under floor network of pipe work and the roof water is collected and recycled through a ‘grey water’ recycling system. All these features mean that clients not only have the comfort of being able to work in a low ‘carbon’ building but also that they are insulated from the rapidly rising fuel costs that many businesses are currently experiencing.

“The internet connections are second only to those found in the Square Mile of the City of London using, most unusually in a rural setting, fibre optic cable connection and the telephony system options use the latest technology to afford clients a high degree of flexibility in their options rarely experienced elsewhere.”

Coupled with the completion of the build and the first lettings of office space is the announcement of the appointment of Mudd & Co Chartered Surveyors as sole letting agents. Mudd & Co, established in York in 1986 provide regional cover with offices at Bedale, Thornton Watlass and associate offices in Stockton on Tees and are delighted to have this opportunity to be involved with such a prestigious and forward thinking development.

“The development provides an opportunity to run ones business from the comfort of new, bright, comfortable, characterful rural offices just north of York off the A19 with excellent road, (rail via York and Thirsk) communications, first class computer connection and telephony services, surely providing greater quality of life and opportunity to be more creative” said Tim Mudd.

“We are hoping to find businesses to take leases at The Hawk who have a need for high speed connectivity such as software designers, and those who may use all the facilities available, including “out-worker” coordination centres, or multinational organisations who may find accommodation and conference facilities useful”

Mudd & Co will be delighted to handle all enquiries and arrange for interested parties to sample this splendid environment personally.
